Ensuring Child Safety

Compassion is searching for credible institutions that can give secure homes to the 3,720 highly vulnerable children who lost parents and who are at risk of being exposed to abuse, violence, exploitation and trafficking due to the quake. Staff members assess each situation and create plans that will allow the Compassion-sponsored children to continue the development process.

Long-term solutions for church partners include rebuilding facilities and ensuring a water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) strategy is in place at 44 centers (including schools) destroyed or severely damaged by the quake. A technical team has been hired; five trained Haitian engineers will manage the rebuild of eight to nine centers, and each of the 44 church partners will write their own rebuild strategy to include buildings (based on current seismic code), latrines and clean water source solutions.
